Research Interests

Dr. Lihua Marmorstein was trained as a molecular and cell biologist. After receiving her PhD in Neuroscience from SUNY Downstate Medical Center, she completed her postdoctoral training in Cancer Biology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and The Wistar Institute of University of Pennsylvania. In 1999, Dr. Marmorstein joined the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and started to focus her research on retinal degenerative diseases. Dr. Marmorstein joined the faculty of the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Science at the University of Arizona in 2003. Her laboratory works to understand the molecular basis of macular degeneration, especially age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of incurable blindness. The pathologic mechanism behind AMD is unknown. Dr. Marmorstein is focusing on the study of inherited maculopathies reminiscent of AMD to pinpoint the defective cellular pathways in macular degeneration. Her research is funded by the University of Arizona, Research to Prevent Blindness, and the NIH.
